Celebrate Your Differences

“MARRY only for love; it is the key to your happiness if every other thing fails.”

Compatibility is the main ingredient that holds the entire journey of a lifetime together. Arranged marriage or love marriage, it’s all the same. As I’m writing this, I’m reminded of a few lines from a poem of a famous poet, ‘On Marriage’. It goes like this…..

Let there be spaces in your togetherness….Just as strings of a lute dance alone though they quiver with the same music.

Stand together….yet not too near together.

For the pillars of the temple stand apart….

When couples around the world dive onto the path of nuptial bliss, a novel chapter of life unfolds as it brings with itself a new story that leads to fond memories thereafter.

As soon as the wedding date is fixed, there is much work to be done for the couple. Deciding the wedding venue, putting together the bride’s trousseau, wedding attire, jewellery, the groom’s suit….and the list goes on….

Adding to this, the colourful accompaniment of the bride’s friends, her maids in waiting and the groom’s friends….it is celebration time for all!

One can experience that time passes at such a fast pace. From wedding decorators to caterers, cameramen to parlour appointments, everything has to be taken care of to make the day the most beautiful one in their lives.

Before the wedding, there is an increased occurrence in the pre-wedding celebrations over the years. New ways of thinking and a liberated eclectic mix of many global influences of various lifestyles, has led to the rejoicing of throwing a bachelor party and a bachelorette party.

The whole night is spent enjoying drinks with friends, feasting to heart’s content (or belly’s content – to be precise!), singing and grooving to lilting songs. As this would be the concluding night they will be spending their single’s lives that is going to come to an end soon, the would-be grooms and brides unwind with buddies for the last time.

Though they all know that the mixed feelings of love and loss is inevitable, they convince themselves that this is the beginning of a new life and the opening of a fresh new chapter in the history of their lives.

It is now a trending feature to see and hear about affianced professional women having a night on the town with their friends for the bachelorette party. It is a lifestyle trend that was once commonplace in the western countries, but now has gained acceptance here too.

Brides-to-be are now bewildered with two options: To have a bridal shower or a bachelorette party?

A bridal shower is a fairly new development that has picked up in Southeast Asia in recent years. This is a great alternative if partying is not your kind of thing. It is usually organised by the bride’s friends, to shower her (so now you know the origin of the name!) with gifts and words of encouragement that will help her start her new home and life as a married woman. This is normally held during the day in cafes and restaurants and is usually fun and girly.

Nonetheless, after all the celebrations are over and all the friends and guests have left, there is one thing that keeps the couple sailing…is love, like this song which goes….

“You’re my anchor in life’s ocean….but most of all, you’re my best friend.”
