Married Saint: St. Gianna Beretta Molla

The words of St. Gianna Beretta Molla are highly regarded by people of all faith, especially the ones she told about family, marriage and love.

More than her teachings or views, her whole life is an inspiration to all. She, through her life, taught that it is our paramount duty to love our family more than anything else.

In a letter to her husband, which St. Gianna wrote a few days before her wedding, she explains love as the most beautiful sentiment that the Lord instills into the soul of men and women.

St. Gianna was beatified by the church in 1994 and was later canonized as Saint in 2004. The reason behind her sainthood is the sacrifices and the pure love she proffered to people around her. She was a medical professional and was helping the sick and the worn-out on a daily basis. She risked her life for the safety of her child; she believed in the words of Bible dearly that she disagreed to take an abortion even when she was enduring excruciating pain.

She believed that love is simple, unconditional, and undemanding. St. Gianna was the messenger of divine love; she advocated wholehearted love between couples. She displayed the ideal and unequivocal love through her marriage. She remained heroically faithful to the commitment she made to her husband and family on the day of her marriage, till she breathed her last breath.

She made the ultimate sacrifice when she risked her life for her unborn baby. By this act of kindness, she teaches us that only those who are brave enough to give themselves totally to the well being of others and commit themselves to God can find true love and then only they will be able to find contentment in their lives.

She is the epitome of partnership and motherhood. Pope Paul VI once glorified St. Gianna and acknowledged her Godly living by describing her as ‘young mother who gave life to her daughter by sacrificing her own, with conscious immolation’ in his book.

These words by her husband Pietro are enough to cement the fact that St. Gianna was a quintessential mother and wife.

Her gentle goodness, holy virtue, affection, and care give me serenity and joy which I asked of Jesus on the day of my wedding”.

It exemplifies how a husband should love his wife altruistically and the wife should love him the same way. You should love your partner more than yourself so that you will receive more love.

St. Gianna’s medical career and her family life went in tandem with the words of the Bible and the teachings of the Lord. Her adherence to the gospel and the Christian living strengthened her resolve to help as many people as she can. St. Gianna led a selfless life and loved everyone around her more than herself. Her life teaches us to be selfless and compassionate. Indeed selflessness is what nourishes a marriage and a family, hence she is rightly known as the Married Saint.
